Screenshot API + Browser Extension
Screenshot API
This week we’ve rolled out general access to our screenshot API! If you’re only interested in getting screenshots of your email for development, testing, or other QA, then this is a way to do just that.
There’s still some working out how a happy medium for rate limiting and pricing usage for the API, but for the moment every account gets 650 screenshots included with their plan to try it out.
At the time of writing, you can generate email screenshots for:
- Apple Mail for iPad
- Apple Mail for Mac
- Outlook for Mac
- Outlook (classic) for Windows
- Chrome Mobile, Tablet, Desktop viewports
We support rendering in both light and dark modes for every client and device we have available. And for Chrome, we have a forced dark mode render that’s comparable to how various Android email clients generate their dark mode views. We’ll also be adding new clients to this list in the coming weeks!
Here’s a video of getting an API key and using our Ruby Gem to generate screenshots:
Try it out and let me know what’s good or could be improved! You can read more about the API documentation at preflight.qa/api.
Chrome Browser Extension
To demonstrate the API in action, Preflight also now has a Chrome browser extension!
The Preflight Screenshots extension makes it super easy to take screenshots of in-progress email templates. Simply open a preview of your HTML email and trigger the extension.
The extension works with local files, but also inside the editors for Beefree, Brevo, Customer.io, Klaviyo, and Resend.
Here’s a little video of it in action:
You can read more about the extension on the at preflight.qa/features/extension.
